Silvana T.

Alumna, NYLF Law & CSI 2014

"I was excited when I received the invitation to attend the NYLF Law & CSI program. I didn’t hesitate to enroll, and it was by far one of the best experiences of my life."

My name is Silvana and I am a native Rhode Islander. Although I am an only child, I am blessed with a very large traditional Italian family. Family is extremely important to me, and every Sunday, we all gather at my grandparent’s house for pasta and meatballs. I am a captain on my high school soccer team, and also play softball and have taken dance classes since I was a toddler.

Q&A with Silvana

  • Why did you want to attend NYLF Law & CSI?

For many years now, I have been interested in the fields of forensics, medical examining, and criminal science. I have started looking at colleges with a primary focus to major in Criminalistics/Criminal Science. Ultimately, my goal is to one day work in one or more of these specialized areas, with my ideal job being a Medical Legal Death Investigator.

I was excited when I received the invitation to attend the NYLF Law & CSI program, not only because of the experience of learning from experts in the CSI field, but also to be able to meet and work with other students who share the same interests as me. I didn’t hesitate to enroll, and it was by far one of the best experiences of my life.

  • What’s your favorite memory from the program?

During my six days at the conference, my favorite simulation was lifting fingerprints off a CD and using our findings as evidence in the mock trials. The various exercises we did taught me that when looking at evidence, you have to look deeper than the surface and really dissect every piece of evidence to the fullest extent.

  • What skills did you learn at NYLF Law & CSI that you use in everyday life?

At the NYLF Law & CSI program, I developed greater leadership skills and more confidence. I was honored to introduce one of the conference’s main speakers. I am able to use the skills I learned and apply them to my life today, in my classes, as an officer on my class council committee, and as a captain of my soccer team. I definitely have more confidence today as a leader, thanks to this program.

  • What’s your favorite memory from the program?

I have lots of fond memories from my time in Washington, DC last summer. However, my favorite memory from the NYLF Law & CSI program was visiting the Crime and Punishment Museum and sharing that experience with my new friends.

  • What would you tell another student who have the chance to come to a program like this?

If another student has the chance to come to a program like this, I would tell them to do it! I was really nervous going into it as I knew absolutely no one, but when I settled in, I quickly made new friends. We all had a great time and made many wonderful memories.

  • Do you feel that NYLF Law & CSI helped you test drive your career choice prior to college?

As I look to the future, I know that attending the NYLF Law & CSI program helped me to figure out exactly what career I want to pursue, and it has provided me with the tools to find the right colleges that will be best for me. I am truly grateful for the experience.
