Q&A with Maya

  • What is the most memorable moment of your program experience?

I remember when my group was on the ship the last night of the program, and I took a second to reflect on the week. I reflected on the places I had visited, the friends I had made, and the skills I will soon use. It made me feel so thankful for the opportunity to go on such a great program and think about the things I hope to do in the future.

  • How has the program encouraged you to take action in your school or community?

JrNYLC Alumni really encouraged me to take action as a young leader in the community. The program focuses on identifying leadership skills and then teaches us how we can use them. Since the program, I have written (for the most part) two full leadership trainings, and implemented one. I have also served on staff at National Youth Leadership Training, and hope to do the same this year.

The program also teaches you how to use your leadership skills to create your own organization. The program inspired and encouraged me to create the organization Haunts for Hunger, with one of my best friends, in 2014. It is a charity haunted house to help those who are food insecure in my county. It has been a success with raising about 275 pounds of food in total since our first event. Over the next few years we hope to help more people who are struggling with this issue.

  • What inspires you as a young leader?

As a young leader, I am inspired by others who create organizations and do service to help people, ranging from the founders of our country to people who go to my school. I am also inspired and encouraged by my friends and I's positive impacts on the community.

  • How is attending the program different than learning in a traditional classroom?

There are many aspects of the program that are different than learning in a traditional classroom. First, you are surrounded by people you don't know, but you all have a passionate goal of improving your leadership skills. Second, you are in an amazing, historical area that works directly with the program. The activities you participate in teach you about others that used the leadership skills you are learning about now. Lastly, you are at the program for a whole week, so you will bond with other students, and work as a very functional team. The activities and simulations that you go through are more fun and meaningful because of the people around you.

  • What extracurricular activities and hobbies do you take part in?

At my school I am part of the Student Council, Service Club and Diversity in Action Club, and I serve as a head Admissions Ambassador, as well as run cross country and track. Outside of school, I am a boy scout.

  • How has your program experience impacted your life and your future?

JrNYLC Alumni has given me the inspiration and motivation to pursue leadership and service opportunities that seemed unreachable. The Envision programs have taught me skills that I use every day, and now, teach to others. Both JrNYLC and JrNYLC Alumni have showed me that young leaders can make a big impact, and I hope to make more of an impact in the future.
