“Attending lectures given by Stanford Law School professors and practicing professionals gave me a clear idea of what pursuing a career in law entails. In addition to the lectures, the mock trial simulation, and the faculty of college students are incredible resources that aren’t available in traditional classrooms.”

Q & A with Leah H.

  • What is the most memorable moment of your program experience?

Although I have many fantastic memories of the Intensive Law & Trial program, the most impactful was the lecture given by Professor David Engstrom on legal procedure and the adversarial process in the United States. This lecture was my favorite as it was most in line with my own interests, and it helped me narrow down my interests and goals in law.

  • How has the program encouraged you to take action in your school or community?

Since the program, I’ve become much more involved in helping underclassmen prepare for their future based on my own experiences. I’ve become a student tutor, and I am now much more involved in my community; seeking out more responsibility and volunteer work than I did previously. My experience with Envision has encouraged me to find new leadership opportunities and given me the tools and confidence to succeed and manage my time efficiently.

  • What inspires you as a young leader?

Several of my teachers, as well as the other students have motivated me to challenge myself in school and service. From helping me apply to colleges to finding activities and programs that fit my goals, my teachers have encouraged my growth and accomplishments throughout high school, giving me the confidence and skills to be successful. Between classes, clubs, and tutoring, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet many students who motivate me to set a positive example both academically and morally. Helping other students with schoolwork, college preparation, clubs, or even just social problems, inspires me to work harder and remain positive.

  • How was attending the program different than learning in a traditional classroom?

The Intensive Law & Trial program was representative of a college setting. We were given more freedom, and more responsible for time management. We were split into small groups of around fifteen students to one Faculty Advisor which meant more personalized advice and guidance. Not only that, but after attending lectures given by Stanford Law School professors and practicing professionals, we had a clear idea of what pursuing a career in law entails. In addition to the lectures, the mock trial simulation, and the faculty of college students are incredible resources that aren’t available in traditional classrooms. By providing access to college students, professors, practicing attorneys, and presenting an engaging activity, the program offered a more practical, real world oriented perspective of the field of law.

  • How has your program experience helped you focus on a career path?

Before the Intensive Law & Trial program, I knew I was interested in law and politics, but I wasn’t certain whether or not I should pursue it professionally. However, after listening to the many lectures and participating in the mock trial simulation, I realized my passion for law. Another concern of mine was which type of law I’d study and practice. The program helped me determine that I didn’t have an interest in criminal law and wanted to focus more on contracts and politics. After the program I decided to study international law and policy.

  • What extracurricular activities and or hobbies do you take part in?

I am a part of my school's Mock Trial and Speech and Debate teams. I tutor middle school students after school, and I am part of At Your Service, a leadership group on campus. I also take an active role at my church by taking missions trips.

  • What are your professional aspirations?

I hope to practice international law and politics with an emphasis on discrimination and cultural and historical preservation. My goal is to work with the United Nations to help increase international cooperation in extinguishing racism and xenophobia. Along with advancing acceptance, I hope to aid with policy to create more powerful regulatory agencies to oversee the discovery and care of significant historical and cultural documents, landmarks, art, and relics.

  • How has your program experience impacted your life and your future?

Envision’s Intensive Law & Trial program helped me to identify my interests and strengths. By receiving information from professionals and students of law, I was able to isolate the areas of law in which I’m most interested. Through the course of the program I developed critical thinking, public speaking, and writing skills that I will continue to use through my academic and professional future.

  • What would you tell other students who are interested in attending an Envision program?

Envision’s programs help students explore their interests and gain insight into careers and courses of study. The program is hosted in a collegiate setting which allows students to experience, not only the academic side of post-secondary education, but the other aspects such as balancing greater amounts of freedom and responsibility. The resources provided to students give them insight into many different aspects of their interest. Academically, the programs are challenging, and the Envision staff is supportive and helpful at all times. These programs are a wonderful way to network with professors, mentors, and other students across the world.
