At Envision by WorldStrides, we provide hands-on educational experiences to foster critical thinking and innovation—even when we can’t be together in person! Envisionary Labs are at-home experiential learning activities that promote new ways of learning.
Welcome to the Viruses and Preventive Medicine Challenge—this lab can be completed individually or as a family. Get ready to dive into the fascinating world of preventive medicine and discover whether a career in public health or research could be the path for you!
Please note: this lab is intended for students in grades 9-11. However, older or younger students can still attempt the challenge and are sure to enjoy it.
During this lesson, we’ll explore the topic of viruses, which has been spotlighted recently due to COVID-19. Take a peek behind the scenes and learn about the work that goes into helping populations stay safe and healthy!
Today, you’ll learn about the structure of viruses and how to use the Epidemiological Triangle model to prevent infectious diseases from happening. You’ll then take on the role of a public health professional to develop a Public Awareness Campaign in response to a virus. A lot goes in to successfully getting people to change their behaviors, so your work will examine the social factors of campaigns.
To guide you through the creation process of these challenges, you’ll use the design thinking process. Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) professionals use the design thinking process to solve real-world problems every day.
