Maddy joins us today to share highlights from her time at Intensive Law & Trial, an Envision by WorldStrides program. We chat with Maddy about how this experience has impacted her perspective on the legal field and her future career goals.
What was the most memorable moment of your program experience?
The most memorable moment was on the first day when I got to talk to people who also wanted to study law and have real, in-depth conversations. Not only did I find people with the same interests as me, I also made a good group of friends. There wasn't an awkward period – we went from strangers to friends in a matter of seconds!
How as the program encouraged you to take action in your school or community?
I attempted to start a mock trial team at my school after attending Intensive Law & Trial. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful – but it has shown me what extracurricular I want to dedicate myself to in college!
How was attending the program different than learning in a traditional classroom?
The program was very hands-on and in small groups, so I really was able to learn and retain the information. Additionally, everyone was interested and dedicated so I felt like my dedication to the subject was matched by my peers which made it easier to do group work.
How has your program experience helped you focus on a career path?
Before the program, I was pretty sure I wanted to be a lawyer but still had some reservations. I was nervous a career in law wouldn't be everything I wanted it to be. After the program, I am more sure than ever that I would love to be a lawyer.
What are your professional aspirations?
I want to be a child advocacy lawyer.
Do you intend on going to college? If so, have you decided your major?
Yes! I am planning on earning my degree in psychology and political science, along with minors in Spanish, French, and Japanese!
What would you tell other students who are interested in attending an Envision program?
Just go for it! It was pretty intimidating to think about spending $4,000+ dollars, flying alone, and being surrounded by a bunch of intelligent people I didn’t know yet, but I just went for it and so should you. There truly isn't any other program that will give you an accurate idea of what it is like to be a lawyer or doctor or whatever career you choose.
Thank you, Maddy!
Over the course of 10 days, Maddy and her peers were immersed in the world of mock trials, debates, and legal seminars taught by professors, attorneys, and judges. They developed critical thinking and public speaking skills through interactive workshops, hands-on simulations, and by taking on roles of attorneys, witnesses, and judges.
